What Are SAP Compatibility Packs?
SAP Compatibility Packs, also known as compatibility packages, are temporary license models introduced by SAP. They allow companies to continue using certain familiar functions during the migration from older SAP ERP systems to the modern SAP S/4HANA platform. Specifically, this means you receive the right to use your existing ERP functionalities on SAP S/4HANA for a limited period of time, especially if there is not yet a native SAP S/4HANA alternative available.

Why Are the Compatibility Packs Such an Important Topic Right Now?
The usage rights for almost all of these compatibility packs will expire on December 31, 2025 (see also SAP Note 2269324). What will happen after that has not yet been officially communicated in detail by SAP. However, one thing is certain: From 2026 onwards, support for the old functions will end, and companies must have fully transitioned to the new SAP S/4HANA innovations and processes by then at the latest.
Many companies have not yet fully realized the scope and impact of this transition—and time is running out. Often, key business processes are affected, for example in the area of HCM (Human Capital Management), where a switch to H4S4 is necessary, or in production planning, where numerous planning functions are still running via compatibility packs.
What Does This Mean for Your Company?
If you are currently still using Compatibility Packs, you need to identify all affected processes and functions and transition to the new SAP S/4HANA solutions in time. This can be complex, as the new applications are not always direct 1:1 replacements for the previous functions, but often come with changed workflows and new capabilities.
